Sunday, got up after the alarm, Lesa didn’t have a lesson planned for the kids and neither did I, so we just streamed the 9:30am service from Sherwood Oaks. The sermon was about how racism has no place in the Christian heart, and how we should take a posture instead of a stance. A posture requires action where a stance does not. His point was we need to do something, he suggested we listen and learn to start. That sparked discussions with the kids, they didn’t understand what racism is or how it could even exist, they we shocked when I told them I personally have experienced colored restaurants, bathrooms, and water fountains in Georgia and Alabama when I was a kid. I told them schools were segregated until I was in high school and that Lesa and I lived during the Civil Rights Movement even though we were kids. I was their age when Martin Luther King was assassinated. I’ve seen the Klan in Indiana for pretty much all my life. Lesa related stuff she knew too. The kids were dumbfounded. I played Christian music from YouTube after we did church to lighten the room. The kids sang to some of the songs, I feel proud when I hear and see them sing like they did this morning, I did that, Lesa did that, we did that. It’s awesome. Our kids are awesome. We watched some of the old videos we have of the kids, in a lot of them Ashley would say “Dave, I love you. Do you love me?” and I’d say “I love you too Ashley.” She sincerely loved me, still does, you can see it in her eyes. Humbling. Lesa commented at least I have it on video for when she doesn’t love me anymore. She’ll always love me I know but it won’t be so verbal or obvious. It’s kind of cool to see how she was processing her situation, she was figuring out her place, figuring out she was really and truly loved by us, and she was discovering she loved us too. God is good. After lunch I loaded the mower on the trailer and headed up to cut our grass, got halfway around and the mower just quit. Ran the battery down trying to get it to start. Pushed it back on the trailer and we headed back home. Dillan and I worked on it, not sure what was wrong, but got it running and cut the back yard as a test, not sure what to do about the 5 acres, not sure I trust the lawnmower, I need a tractor! Dwyane helped Lesa in the garden, he hoed the weeds and did a good job and he was very proud of the job he did. We all spent the afternoon indoors in air conditioning due to the heat, the kids did Chromebooks and Lesa and I worked, Lesa more so than I. After dinner Lesa took the kids to get yesterday’s mail. I finally finished updating the financial spreadsheet I have on the kids’ accounts, the Indiana College Funds are losing big bucks, I’m pissed off about it. Kids got to bed, they stayed there without getting up for a change.
