The Washington Hatchet softball team started the week playing well against North Daviess and finished it playing even better, with the season’s first win, a 6-0 win over Loogootee.

The Hatchets (1-7) used a five-run fifth inning to break away from what had been shaping up as a pitchers duel, to secure the win over their Martin County foe.

“We never really got our bats going tonight and I give Veale credit for that. I think she is a really good pitcher.” said LHS coach Greg Clark. “Alan (Lemon) always has his team ready and we fell victim.”

The Hatchets picked up a run in the second when Brooke Reed and Michelle Hulsey both singled. Reed then scored when Whitney Hill reached on an error. However, in spite of Washington threatening in the third and fourth, it wasn’t until the fifth when WHS was able to break the game open. Hulsey and Amber Criswell singled, while Hill and Jennifer Bunch both walked. But it was a base-clearing triple from Jessica Hill that she also scored on after the throw to make it 6-0. Hulsey ended the night with two of the Hatchets’ six hits.

“I was pleased with the way we have gone to the plate swinging this year,” said Lemon. “We have been putting the ball in play. Tonight Hall got one. Our seniors have taking these young kids under there wings and kept them pumped up. They are doing a really good job.”

Loogootee’s best scoring chances against Kendra Veale came in the second, when Darlene Wells singled followed by a walk from Charmagne Slaubaugh, but Veale got a strikeout and a ground ball to end the inning.

“I though Kendra stayed focused and got some strikeouts even,” said Lemon. “This was definitely one of her better outings.”

Loogootee also got hits from Kris Mann and Jess Clark. Veale ended the day with 10 Ks, while Crew had five for the Lions in six innings of work.

“I can’t be disappointed in Crew’s pitching. We just didn’t bring our best game,” said Clark. “Hopefully when we go to Crawford County tomorrow we will have our ‘A’ game.”
