I got up before everyone and got ready for work and left before anyone woke up. I went to SAIC in Bedford first thing and delivered a map set and got back to Scientia and managed to keep mostly busy although I was thinking vacation. I sent Lesa a text and said if we actually sell the land we should all take a trip to Greece while we have cash and health to do so. Yup, in vacation mode. Todd took me to Enterprise and I picked up our rental, a navy blue mini van. Left my truck at work and drove the van home at 2:30pm or so. Ashley still a pill, no boys anywhere, all upstairs on tablets or playing or something. Lesa took Ashley and returned books to the library, went to Dollar General, and Ruler for some groceries. Lesa took the dogs for a walk, and when they got back they started digging, and Porter’s leg broke. She’s always been a tough dog, but she was whimpering and crying and we called around to see about getting her euthanized but it was after hours and we would have had to go to Indy. SO we were going to do it in the morning. Now, we weren’t putting her down over a broken leg. She has been on her last leg literally for two years and has been having a difficult time breathing, and even more so in the last couple of days and we have thought about it already but she wasn’t in pain and eating okay and still enjoying walks. So, Dillan and I went out to find a spot in the woods to bury her tomorrow and Lesa came out saying she couldn’t get her breath and her tongue was turning blue so I said I’d put her down then. Came in and she was having a stroke, so I probably wouldn’t need to put her down afterall. I stayed with her and talked sweet nothings to her and the kids and Lesa were all crying because it was obvious to all she was dying right then and now. So, I found a heartbeat and kept my hand on her chest and petted her head and her breathing got shallower and she had a couple of mini strokes and she finally passed. We buried her and it was all tears. Lesa and I are happy that she passed while we were there and not on vacation when she’d be alone. And we were glad that she passed naturally more-or-less while at home and surrounded by love. It’s been a sad night and a big day tomorrow. RIP Porter – one of the better dogs God made!
