Dillan: Daddy, did you have a sister?

Dave: Yes, she died.

Dillan: So you were a Dad and a brother?

Dave: I still am. I’m a dad to you guys and I have a brother James and Avery and a sister Kristie AND I’m a husband too.

Dillan: Do I know them?

Dave: Yes, you saw them at Christmas.

Dillan: Oh yeah.

Dillan: Why did your sister die?

Dave: She had cancer.

Dillan: What is cancer?

Dave: It’s a disease that can kill people.

Dillan: Why?

Dave: For different reasons. My sister didn’t take care of herself like she should have and that is partly why she got it.

Dillan: Do you have cancer?

Dave: I don’t know. Why did you just ask that?

Dillan: I heard you and Mommy talking.

Dave: Well, I don’t know Dillan. Maybe I do, maybe I don’t. The doctor will let me know pretty soon.

Dillan: Do you take care of yourself?

Dave: I try to.

Dillan: Are you going to die too?

Dave: Someday. We all have to die someday.

Dillan: If you die Mommy will cry all day.

Dave: Yes, I know. She will need you to help her.

Dillan: I will! And when I grow up she can live with me.

Dave: That is good cause when you grow up she will be old and will need lots of help especially if I’m gone.

Dillan: Okay, I will help her with everything!

Dave: I know you will. You’ll be a good son to her cause I know you love Mommy lots.

Dillan: I do!

Dave: Okay, it’s settled then. If I die you will take care of Mommy for me.

Dillan: Okay.

Dave: Don’t forget to help your brothers and sister too. You all need to help each other, okay?

Dillan: Okay.
