Washington to graduate 182 Saturday

Washington High School will present diplomas to 182 graduates during its commencement exercises at 2 p.m. Saturday in the high school gymnasium.

Following the processional, Calie Garland will open the ceremony after which the NJROTC will present the colors and the choirs will lead the national anthem. Austin Boyd, senior class president, will offer the president’s speech. The salutatory address will be given by Luke Sherar followed by a musical selection by the choirs. The valedictory address by Mary Barnard will be followed by a musical selection by the band.

Provost Laurel Smith will recognize the Vincennes University Early College students. Steve Peterson, WHS principal, will present the graduating class and Dr. Daniel Roach, superintendent, will award the diplomas.

Caleb King will make the closing remarks and the recessional will follow.

The Class of 2017 has chosen royal blue and silver for its class colors and the rose as its class flower. Its class motto is, “Learn from yesterday, live for today, dream for tomorrow…” Albert Einstein

Valedictorian

Mary Barnard is the daughter of Tony and Angela Barnard. At Washington High School, Mary has been involved in many different
activities including academic bowl, CEO, and soccer. Outside of school, Mary served as Indiana DECA State President and
volunteered at the WISH stem program at Lena Dunn Elementary. In the fall, Mary plans to attend the Indiana University Kelley
School of Business to major in finance.

Salutatorian

Luke Sherar is the son of Daniel and Jana Sherar. At Washington High School he has been involved in different band activities
including marching band, jazz band, show choir band, all region and all district honor band, solo and ensemble, pep band, and
concert band. He has also been involved in Math Academic bowl and math tutoring. In the fall he plans to attend the University of Indianapolis and major in music therapy.
