LOOGOOTEE — A Shoals woman and her 4-year-old grandson were killed in a Monday morning car crash just west of Loogootee on U.S. 50.
Lisha M. (Dant) Moffett, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene by Daviess County Coroner Stephen Cullen.
Her grandson, Rolen Wilson, who was a month from being 5, was taken to Daviess Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to a Daviess County Sheriff’s Department accident report.
At 8:02 a.m., Moffett, driving a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire east on U.S. 50, “for an unknown reason failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the roadway,” according to the report.
The car went into a ditch, struck a culvert, went airborne, struck the ground and continued overturning for several more feet, according to the report. Rolen and his grandmother were thrown from the car.
Before the crash, Rolen had been secured by a seat belt in a booster seat in the front passenger seat, according to the report. Moffett was not wearing a seat belt.
The Daviess County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the county coroner, Loogootee Police Department, Martin County Ambulance Service, Loogootee Fire Department, Montgomery and Cannelburg volunteer fire departments and Southwest Medical.
